Why Am I Not An Atheist?

I am a strong believer of God, yes I am.

Now before you judge me, hear me out.

I am not saying that I can strongly say that God exists, he is the one. I have some different beliefs. I am not saying that there are no questions regarding the God. Oh there are, there are many unanswered questions. Sometime I myself, keep asking about the past myths, the story that has been put forward of all the Gods. And if you are a Hindu, then I am pretty sure you have innumerable unanswered questions. And so do I, but I am still not an atheist.

I am a strong believer of God, yes I am.

You know, why? This is because of the fact that I pray. I am not saying that when I pray, ‘God’ gives me what I want. All I am saying is by praying I develop a sense of faith within me, that everything is going to be just fine, and I gain some strength to fight against the situations that I may be dealing with. Anything wrong in that? I don’t think so. When I pray, meditate, I don’t rely on God, there is no superlative magic that is going to move a wand in the air and all my problems would vanish, and all my wishes would come true. But I do believe that there is some supreme power in what I do, cause once I get the strength to deal with something, the optimism filled inside, I know everything will be all right. I borrow faith and hope from what we call “God”.

And that is why I am not an atheist.

I am a strong believer of God, yes I am.

I am not saying if someone is an atheist, he or she is wrong. They are right in their own way, how and what they feel, that I cannot tell. But they have their own beliefs, and so do I.

I may not say God is everything, but he is definitely something for me. I get the strength to believe in myself when I pray to him, when I chant his verses, when I just close my eyes and see through my inner senses the vision of “Om”. I feel peaceful, optimistic, and I regain belief.

And that is why I am not an atheist,

I am a strong believer of God, yes I am.

PS: I still believe that humanity is a religion above and beyond all other religions.

  2. “Prayer is not asking. It is a longing of the soul. It is daily admission of one’s weakness. It is better in prayer to have a heart without words than words without a heart.”
    ― Mahatma Gandhi

    Btw, it’s a wonderfully written post!❤

  3. I feel the same Moushmi! You always write the things that keep floating in my conscience. I don’t think I am religious (unlike the college me who had her own temple at her hostel room) but I do believe in some kind of a superpower! The mere thought of no one guiding us, or certain unreasonable things happening to us, frightens me. When I feel disillusioned I think about this quote from Steve Jobs,

“You have to trust in something – your gut, destiny, life, karma, whatever. This approach has never let me down, and it has made all the difference in my life.”
I too want to believe in something, and I guess that something is my religion.

  4. I love the honesty and clarity of your writing. I believe in God. If I felt God did not exist there would not be a reason to take another breath. For me…God is love…God is within me. He is everything to me. I guess the easiest way to explain it is that I LOVE HIM.

  6. I feel there is definitely someone when i see how perfectly a human body works starting from the perfect ratio of air we breathe to all the mechanism to convert food into energy and protecting itself against anything…when even doctors rely on the unique ability of the body to heal itself…when i see a perfectly formed flower with a sweet smell…when i see a symmetrical leave which knows how to convert sunlight into food….when i see a line of ants moving in a perfect formation…when i see the complexities and beauties of nature…when i see different creatures and their ability to adapt…when i see a baby bird learning to fly or a tiger cub learning to hunt..the ability to do it all so naturally….when i see the wide variety of amazing creatures of the sea like a flimsy jellyfish’s survival by stinging or an octopus ejecting ink…the different survival mechanisms … how do they know how to be like that….the oceans the waves the forests ….the layers of the earth…planets revolving in perfectly stable state since millions of years…everything from an atom to the infinite universe amazes me…and the way things are now…it cant be due to some ‘chance’….there has to be someone!
People may not realise it fully or can keep fighting but they may never know the complete truth…but appreciating what we have and being kind and being human is the biggest religion….
